Bile flows to the first part of the bowel in green color and change the color in brown in the large bowel. If stays very short time in large bowel such as if you have irritatable bowel syndrome not enough time to change color with the effect of the digestive enzyms so it comes out as a green stool. Also if you eat a lot of green vegetables or foods has green dye in it stool comes out green.

Reply to V. Yetimyan   M.D.'s Post: Ok That explains some, and I thank you! Now, why would my daughters stool not be staying long enough to turn the usual brownish color? Her diet this last insident, was nothing like fresh vegies that day, but she did have an orange and a banana...Would she be eating too fast?Should I be concerned? She is only 8 years old and I hate to put her through the tests that go along with things like this if it isn't nesassary...She used to be worse, before we took out a lot of dyes and preservatives from her diet! The episodes were more frequent! and the pain more intense! I personally have closely watched, her and believe she has an irritable bowel. I was kidnapped at age 6 and had an irritale bowel my whole life, and attribute it to that happening in my life. My daughter has not had things easy emotionally. We just lost her dad whom she was very close with, after many years of him being very ill! I try to keep her dealing openly with her feelings about everything, and stay very close with her, so she doesn't hold things in that she shouldn't.Please let me know if something serious could be wrong with her, or have you seen this with IBS? Thanks so much!

Sometimes foods or drinks which does not look like green change the color of the stool to green . If green vegetables or other food dyes and food preservatives are not the cause then other conditions needs to be ruled out, that is any bowel conditions which gives diarrhea and increase the transit time in the large bowel such as Irritable bowel syndrome, Inflammatory bowel disease , Gastroenteritis or Stomach virus etc. You need a Pediatric Gastroenterologist to evaluate her and to find out if any kind of bowel disease causing fast transit time in the large bowel and making the stool look green.

What would the routine a child specialist in this area do? Do they put the child to sleep for those tests that are so invasive? Thanks again!
