My father recently had a colonoscopy (4 days ago). He went and had one becuase he was unable to have a bowel movement. The doctor told him that there was no cancer found. After the procedure he has blood in his urine and still unable to have a bowel movement. Are these signs of cancer, or is it normal after a colonoscopy?

REPLIED Check Mark

If he had a colonoscopy this would have nothing to do with blood in his urine. A colonist normally requires one to clean their system out as well prior to the procedure. If he is having blood in his urine then he needs to have his prostate and kidneys checked as he may have infection. But blood in the urine after a colonoscopy should have nothing to do with that procedure. You need to have a Kidney Specialist check him as it sounds as though other problems are going on. He should have full blood work ups done also.

A colonoscopy is done through the rectum not the urethra. If a test was done through his urethra then yes, this often cause's blood to be present afterward but not for 4 days time. If I may be of further assistance please reply.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Then he needs to be further checked by a kidney doctor and a Lower and upper GI specialist as there are other test that should be done such as Endoscopy and Barium usage for contrast. It sounds as though he has a blockage somewhere but the colonoscopy normally would reveal this. The GI specialist that did the Coloscopy should have also ordered other procedures once he found nothing. You should call him back to alert him that your father is still not having normal bowel movements. It is hard to say if this is cancer as there are many problems of the digestive tract that can cause your complaints. But the blood in the urine is a troublesome sign and needs to be checked. Get him back to the doctor or better yet, perhaps a new doctor for work ups. This is all I can tell you on this.
