chronic vomiting after appendicitus
Sent to Health Experts August 01 08:42 PM

My son had appendicitus 8 days ago and had the appendix removed. It was perforated and had an abcess with peridontitis (?). He seemed better for a day after being released but then started to vomit every two hours for the next two days. We returned to the hospital where he was rehydrated and given nausea medicine and eventually released but he is still vomiting about every two hours. He has only been drinking water and ice and cannot keep this down. All X-rays and cat scans turned up normal but his white blood cell count was a bit above average. He has no fever and no pain at the incision, just nausea constantly. Any ideas how to get past the nausea and keep him from getting dehydrated again? Thank you very much. leswil3@comcast.net

Hi

You might try backing him off the water and go to just ice chips. One at a time if that's what he has to do. Keep him well supplied.

Is he passing gas yet? Can he hear or feel his stomach rumbling yet? If you have access to a stethescope, you might listen to his lower abdomen for the presence of bowels sounds.

When we are given general anesthesia, coupled with bowel surgery like your son had, it takes awhile for things to start moving down there again. The anesthesia paralyses it for a time.

So, try the ice chips, really slow and steady....like one ever 5-10 minutes. See how that works.

If it still doesn't help, it's time to call his doctor again. He may prescribe an anti-nausea pill or suppository he can use.

Hope that helps,

Kerry
