Dilation & Effacement

Sent to Health Experts August 31 07:37 PM

I am 39 wks and approx. 8 days from the expected due date. I was just told by my doctor that I am dilated 3 centimeters and effaced 80%. I was nothing 1 wk ago. Does this mean the baby will come before the due date? How long can I stay like this before active labor will start?

You can actually become more dilated than you are and effaced prior to real active labor. It really depends upon your own body and the baby. I'm sure at this point your doctor is going to start seeing you a couple of times a week to keep an eye on how far you are becoming dilated. This can be a good thing.. Less labor time when you do go into active labor. As far as when it will happen.. nobody can tell.. so try to relax.. you're not far though.. Much luck to you.. and with the new baby..

If you need anything else please feel free to ask!
