Sent to Health Experts September 24, 2005 12:06 a.m.

I am 11 days late on my period, I am nauseaus, I pee alot, and my breast are tender; but I have taken two home preg. tests and both were neg. So I went to my ob/gyn today and after examining me he told me I was "definately pregnant", but I did not take a test at his office. And I read that the signs he looked for during the exam could also be present just because I have not had a period. I would really like to be pregnant, but I do not want to get my hopes up for nothing. Is he so much more likely to be able to tell that I am pregnant by an exam, making him more accurate with a "definitely pregnant" diagnosis when the home preg. tests gave me neg. results?

Hello

First of all, some pregnancy tests won't show pregnancy until 2 weeks after the missed period. You have a few more days to go before that. The reason for this is that the pregnancy hormones are not strong enough until then to show up in your urine.

Diagnosis of Pregnancy
Your health care practitioner makes the diagnosis of pregnancy based on many factors.
SIGNS OF PREGNANCY
Missed period
skin changes
Breast changes
"Blueing" of vaginal mucosa
Skin discolorations
EVIDENCE OF PREGNANCY
Increased size of the uterus
Softening of the uterus
Softening of the cervix
Positive pregnancy test
ABSOLUTE PROOF OF PREGNANCY
Detection of fetal heartbeat
Ultrasound visualization of fetus
Fetal movement

If there hasn't been a positive pregnancy test yet, I'd wait a few more days to a week before getting excited. Perhaps your doctor is real good, and can tell, but just to be safe for your feelings, I'd wait a while longer.

Hope that helps,

Kerry
