what is the most effective over the counter pain reliver

I recently had an accident and had to go to the emergency romm. I was diagnosed with multiple internal bruises and torn ligaments. The Dr. precribed 5 mg. loritab. The pain was so severe that I had to double the dose. I don't have any more of the medication and since I went to ER *I cannot get a refill. I don't have a regular md and am still in pain.
