Severe, deep pain in shoulder that was 3rd degree burned to ...

Sent to Health Experts November 20, 2005 4:02 a.m.

Severe, deep pain in shoulder that was 3rd degree burned to the bone & had 4 skin grafts 3 years ago. This has only happened in the past few days...and though I know I have reduced muscle there because of the prior burn, it feels like the pain is in the bone area...not a muscle strain and did not injure or strain the area recently. The weather is turning cold...can I expect to have future, non-specific pain with this old injury? Or is there a chance of something more serious setting in because of the invasive injury 3 years ago. I have had no trouble with this scar or 11% area besides reduced strength and absorbtion of heat in the summertime. Thanks for any help...

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 40

Already Tried:
Darvocet & Ibuprophen: with relief for several hours...but haven't seen burn doctor in 2 1/2 years. Don't know what to expect long term.

So...would you know if there's a chance of cancer setting in after an injury / skin grafts like this...or just arthritis? I've moved pretty far away from the burn center I went to when I got hurt and will not be able to see that doctor again...but can ask a doctor at the free clinic I go to...I just don't know if they will know anything about burns and after...thanx for your quick reply.

I haven't accepted the answer yet because...I was hoping for a bit more info than just, "could...be arthritis...go...see...burn doctor..."

I don't see it being arthritis because bone and joint wasn't damaged that I know of. Wanted to know if muscle surgery would effect possibility of arthritis? Why arthritis? I had A&P but...What, if anything else?

If the extra info I requested is not worth the $3.oo I can afford to spend, I will understand. I guess I could have been enticed to pay a bonus for elaberation though.

Thanx for all the email reminders...I'm not done here...just wondering if there was any more info? And for update: Weather still cold today but it doesn't hurt like it did...wouldn't arthritis stay?

Hello

Being an expert here yourself, you must know how hard it is to make a solid diagnosis over the internet. In fact, it's unethical to do so without the benefit of a physical examination and lab tests.

Your scar could have some hypertrophy. Hypertrophy of a scar is an over growth of tissue due to increased size of the cells. This can happen most often when a scar is near or on a joint such as the shoulder. Signs of hypertrophy are increased inflammation and pain.

With arthritis, once the weather is constant again, and the body adapts to the barometer, the pain can subside until which time the barometer, or weather changes again.

In order to find out if you have arthritis, you would need to have diagnostic studies done, including blood tests to look for arthritic markers. I wouldn't be able to tell you unless the tests were done, and then it would be the doctors decision, or diagnosis if you will.

Please let me know if you have more questions.
