I am 27 and want a hysterectomy due to painful periods, which I cannot lead a normal life. Can my doctor refuse to do this. I do not want children, and do not want to consider any other option. I have too long before I begin menopause. I cannot make it through one more of these periods. Can a doctor refuse my wishes??

Yes, a doctor can refuse to perform this as an elective procedure. If your doctor doesn't feel a hysterectomy is warranted, they will most likely refuse. The reasons a doctor would refuse have to do with your age. You say that you don't want to have kids, but there is no guarantee that you won't change your mind in the future for a number of different reasons. The other reason, also due to your age, is the high probability that you would have to take hormone replacement therapy. HRT can cause side effects that may be more undesirable than your painful periods. Have you been examined for endometreosis? What about birth control pills? Talk to your doctor and see what else is recommended. If you don't feel that you are being heard by your doctor, you can always go to another one, but chances are they won't want to do the procedure either without exhausting all other options.

I'm sorry for your pain, and I hope you are able to find something that works for you.
