How do i know if i have a fracture?

I fell 3 days ago on my wrist and had some swelling and pain.I went to a orthopedic doctor today and had x-rays done,he seems to think it might be a hairline scaphoid fracture but he didn't see anything defenite on the x-rays.he gave me a brace and told me to come back next week.Can it be a fracture and if so what happens?
