I have a bartholin gland cyst. I know this becuase I had one once before. It is about the size of a grape, or even a bit larger. I am out of town, across the country, so getting to my doctor is not an option. Will hot compresses or baths possibly help it go down?

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 35

Already Tried:
watchful waiting, warm bath with epsom salts, cursing at the cyst!

Actually what it will and should do if you use a warm compress or soaking in the tub will help generally to draw it to the surface. Ibuprofen for inflammation and discomfort as well. If it is severely infected, antibiotic will be needed as well. But without seeing your doctor at this point, warm wet compresses and ibuprofen.

Hope you feel better soon. If you need anything else please feel free to ask. If you found this helpful don’t forget to click the *accept* button!

So, is drawing it to the surface good? How hard should I push with the warm wet compresses?   How will I know if it is infected? I am away for seven days, I am nervous about this...BUT, I know my insurance will be a problem if I go to an emergency room...so, I am trying to avoid that. IT is causing some discomfort when I get up and down, but only sometimes.

They would do a culture of the fluid to tell if it is infected. Most don't start out that way, but can become that way. Moist heat can help unblock the opening so that the fluid can drain out. Only way to know if it is infected is redness, possible fever, extreme swelling. Once warm compresses are used if it's not infected should go away between 3-5 days.

Hope this helps.
