Question

Scalp problem

Sent to Health Experts January 05, 2006 11:35 p.m.

I am having a skin problem on my scalp. It is confined to an area about 2 inches in diameter, at the crown. The best way to describe it is that it has several small, crusty "gunky" sores, with scabs. It does not really itch, but is instead uncomfortable. I went to the doctor today; she said she was unsure what it was but prescribed an antifungal/steroid combo. cream. It is not common dandruff or ringworm, she said. She also ruled out an insect bite. She said if it is not better in TWO WEEKS she will refer me to a dermatologist. I have already been suffering with this for 3 weeks, so I am hoping to find an effective treatment way sooner than that. I have tried lots of different things to help get rid of it to no avail. (keeping my hair extremely clean, antiseptics such as Listerine, medicated shampoo, etc.) It is not a reaction to any change of product such as shampoo either. I have a history of excema (sp?) and a family hx. of psoriasis, but it does not look anything like either of these to me, due mainly to the "gunky" nature of the eruptions. (Sorry for the vague terminology; I simply cannot think of a better way to describe it.) Any suggestions for treatment? What do you think it might be? Thanks very much for your help.

Hello

The cream that your doctor prescribed would be exactly what I'd recommend. This may have no other name than a dermatitis. The anti-fungal and steroid cream will help if it is a fungus, and it should help the inflammation. Seborrhea or psoriasis can look different on everyone depending on where on the body it is.

What exactly is seborrhea? And wouldn't psoriasis itch? This was vexing to her (that it is more painful, but doesn't itch.) And what usually causes something like this? Could I prevent it in the future? Thanks so much.
