Yesterday, I developed a kidney stone. I was in severe pain and had to go to the emergency hospital. They gave me a steroidal pain med. in my IV. Through out the rest of the morning I had two more acute attacks. These included vomiting, pain and pressure in my left lower back wrapping around above my left hip into my mid left abdomen. Through out the rest of day, I took pain med.(vicodin) and had no more acute episodes, although still experienced moderate pain in left lower back. Now 24 hours after 1st episode, I donot need to rely on pain med., but still have light to moderate pain in my left lower back. At the hospital, after viewing my adomen by x-ray of mri?, I was told that the stone was 2 or 3 millimeters and I would be able to pass it.. I still have some pain in my lower left back, although not too severe. Have I passed the stone? Is it common for pain in the kidney area to linger after the stone is passed? I am trying to get in to see my primary care doctor today, but would welcome your input.

Thank you

Dear Lance,

The very fact that you still have some 'significant' pain indicates that the stone has not been passed. What has probably happened is that the stone hs moved from its previous location (where it was causing a lot of pain) to a new location where it is producing milder symptoms.

It is likely but by no means certain that the stone will pass out on its own (even for 2-3 mm stone there is no guarantee that they will spontaneously pass out). I think that taking the appointment with your PCP is a good idea,
