i have white discharge coming from my vagina what does that mean?

I just recently went for a pap smear and they said that my insides of my vagina were red and i had discharge. well, after that i started noticing white discharge. i was told by another doctor to not worry about it because i am on the depot shot and that causes discharge. what exactly does the white discharge mean?
