My son in 11 mo old and started vomitting Friday
Sent to Health Experts February 26 04:34 PM

My son in 11 mo old and started vomitting Friday night. Sat a.m. he woke at 1a.m. and continued to vomit 4 times. I took him into the ER where they gave him IV and D5NS. He was moderately dehydrated. Today, Sun, he is hardly drinking - only a few ounces every 1-2 hours and is very cranky and tired. My pediatrician tole me not to rush him drinking for the day. Does this seem right? He said he can go with just taking in 4-5 ozs for the day for a week. The ER Dr said he probably has a virus. There is no diarrhea, but today two diapers have orange stains (urate crystals). I cringe at taking him into the ER - it was horific to see them find a vein. I'm afraid I will miss a sign of distress through. Should I take him to the ER or wait for him to see his Pediatrician in the a.m.?

It is ok to wait until the morning to see his peditrician. Poor baby is probably exhausted from the ER treatment.

As long as he is drinking a few ounces every few hours is a good sign. He will gain some hydration and nourishment. Feeding lightly will also give his system a rest.

You could offer him some water. Make sure it is boiled and just lukewarm.

Sounds like he does have a viral syndrome. If he should spike a high temp or the vomiting increase dramatically, by all means go back to the ER.

When anyone is dehydrated, their urine becimes darker in color. Make sure to mention it to the doctor tomoorow morning. I wouldn't worry too much about this now.

Reply to Deborah's Post: Thank you Deborah. He is taking about 1.5 - 2 ozs of Pedialyte every 2-2.5 hours and he is keeping it down. He's not lethargic at all just sleepy from being up so much. I was just worried about the orange staining. I thought when they presented with the urate crystals it was a sure sign of dehydration. His temp has been fluctuating between 99 - 100.5.

He will surely be in tomorrow as soon as his Peds office opens.
