Question

My mother who is 69 years old was diagnosed with ...

Sent to Health Experts March 21, 2006 8:33 p.m.

My mother who is 69 years old was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia many years ago. She has been suffering in many ways for many years. To make a long story short, she met a woman at a Fybromyalgia support group who gives herself shots of B12, 5000 mcg. She gave a bottle to my mother, mom gave herself the shot and it helped her tremendously. Mom went back to her own Doctor but he would only give her shots of 1000 mcg B12, and these have no effect on her. She went to other doctors as well explaining that the 5000 mcg worked, but they all said the same thing, we can only prescribe up to 1000 mcg shot.

It's very frustrating because after all these years she has finally found something that actually works on her but she is unable to get it. The woman she met lives in Florida, and my mother in Texas, so mom can’t go to the friend’s doctor. How can we find a doctor that will help her or get the level of B12 that she needs? She lives in Lubbock, TX and has been to almost every doctor in town. The doctors she has seen have all admitted they know little about Fibromyalgia.

Someone else said we might get that large of a dosage from a veterinarian, and she is willing to give that a try but is concerned that the B12 they give to horses may not be the same as the B12 they give to humans.

What are our options? Can we buy the liquid 5000 mcg B12 for shots somewhere online or by phone? Is there a doctor somewhere in the US that might prescribe it for her by phone? Should we try a vet? Do we have to go out of the country to get what she needs to help her? Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Optional Information:
Female , Age: 69

Already Tried:
My mother has been to many doctors over the past 10 years at least. The B12 5000 mcg shot was the first thing that actually helped her! She has tried so many things over the years, physical therapy, psychiatrists, numerous drugs and vitamins. Nothing worked until this. Now we cant get it.

B12 injections may be purchased over the counter in Canada. The following website carries it under the name "Cyanocobalamin injection":

I would only consider this under the direct knowledge of her Primary Doctor though.

Many studies are reporting success with sublingual B12 instead. It is absorbed into the blood stream, but without the injection.

I did find evidence supporting 5mg B12 injections for severe fatigue and Fibromyalgia.

Perhaps printing supporting articles for her Doctor will help:

I would not resort to Veterinary Medicine.

I care for a mother who is ill as well and I appreciate your "stop at nothing" approach when you find something that works.
I truly hope this helps-if it does please accept.
