Question

Can a person feel pain from the bone itself?

Sent to Health Experts March 29, 2006 3:17 p.m.

Ten years ago I was hit by a car. Broke alot of bones including my neck. After a week of pain and a second MRI they found my pelvis was completely snapped also. I ended up staying at Eden Hospital for 3 months. My question is can a person accually feel there bones? When laying on my side with one leg on top of the other. It starts to throb, then within 5 minutes its painful. When I shift the leg, the same thing happens to my upper thigh and hip. Then I will lay flat and the leg that had the pressure on it feels like it is on fire. The pain is only below the waist. Again I ask can pain come from the bone itself? And can it be fixed? I will call one doctor explain it and they tell me to see someone else. Help stop the run around. Thank You

The bone itself, both inside and outside has no pain receptors. Any pain you are feeling must derive from nerve cells which can be located around the bone but are not part of it.

So, you have a position where your problem can cause pain due to secondary responses but the pain signals are not coming straight from the bone.

Thank you sir for your time. At least I now can make sense out of the feelings I have. Gotta love getting old before your time. And god bless Aleve.
