I am having some problems with unknown major weight gain i the past 3 months. I swim 75 laps and walk or rollerblade an hour everyday and my diet has not changed and i have gained 30lbs. I have also been having dizzy spells, VERY low energy, ( i have to push myself now) painful breathing sometimes on the left side, and upset stomach. Some days i do not eat and still dont lose any weight. I used to be able to drop a few bls this way in the past. I walk up hills and get out of breathe and dizzy and feel i am not getting enough oxygen. i am someone who eats organic food and thought i was in reasonably good shape. I dont know what is wrong and it seems like any effort i make to lose weight does not work and i am very tired. I have already had my thyroid checked and it came back normal. Any suggestions on what else to get checked or what may be wrong. Thank you for your time

Reply to Dr. F.'s Post: I turned 30 in January, have gained this weight in the past two months. I take lexapro (10 mg for depression for the past year and a half) and yasmin (birth control for the past six months). No leg swelling or fluid retention. My doctor did the basic blood work up , i am slightly anemic, cholesteral is fine, no diabetes, I appreciate your prompt response!!!!!!

Unintentional weight gain can be caused by an underactive thyroid gland or an over active adrenal gland. The adrenal disorder is called Cushing’s syndrome.

Certain types of heart and lung conditions can cause weight gain however this is usually a fluid accumulation obvious in the legs.

Certain medications can cause weight gain. Lexapro can cause weight gain but this would be very unlikely since you have been taking it for 18 months and only experienced weight gain over the past two months.
Pregnancy should be a consideration even though you are taking birth control pills. There are instances where people have been pregnant and still had menstrual flow each month.
Emotional factors particularly depression or excessive eating from anxiety disorders can cause weight gain as well. If you have recently stopped smoking weight gain would be expected also
I suggest that you speak with your physician for a pregnancy test, a screening for Cushing’s syndrome and perhaps a screening for depression.
Routine chemical screening blood work (chem profile) would also be helpful.
