I went to the doctor and got Zithromax for a very red ear and sinus infection. Started it on Thursday. I noticed one of my ears was blocked starting on Sunday. Monday both ears were blocked and today it's worse. They were not blocked at all prior. Should I be going back to my doctor?

Yes anytime that you have been put on antibiotics and become worse after 48 hours of being on them it is a sign you need a different type of antibiotic or a stronger antibiotic for the infection. The Zithromax is a very good antibiotic for this type of infection but it may not be working well for your symptoms so I would recommend that you be seen again for a follow-up with your physician.

Reply to Cheryl K.'s Post: Is this a side effect of the medication? I have searched around on the internet and found a few articles to this fact. I wasn't feeling this bad at all before. Just a slight ear ache. Now the tonsil is swollen down into my neck and it sounds like a ocean in my ear. Have never had this type of hearing loss before...

Yes it can be a side effect of the medication as some hearing loss can be associated with the Zithromax but it could as well be a worsening of the symptoms themselves as well. In either case it is important that you be seen again for further evaluation as this side effect is not one of the common ones for this medication but it has been reported. That is why you may need to be put on a different type of medication to fully clear up the infection without further side effects.
