There is a condition
called "Raynaud's phenomenon." This is characterized by pallor and
cyanosis (bluish color) of the fingers and sometimes toes. It is usually both
hands and is symmetrical. It is caused by vasospasm (spasm of vessels that feed
the fingers). The cause is not known. It is precipitated by cold or emotions
and relieved by warmth. You can partially prevent these "attacks" by
keeping the whole body warm when you go out doors, and especially by using
mittens and warming your hands before putting the mittens on (you might even
try warming the mittens themselves before wearing them). You could also try
wearing gloves when handling frozen foods at home or in the grocery store.
There are drugs that can reduce the vessel spasms. You should look into treatment
because in some cases the disease progresses and you could start to develop
small ulcers on the tips of the fingers. You can also develop contractures,
severe pain, and changes in the skin, decreased movement, and permanent
disability. Perhaps your situation is not
this bad, but please seek the advice of your doctor or a specialist in vessel
disease.
