Question

I need it very fast

Sent to Health Experts May 05, 2006 8:28 a.m.

In a discussion with a fellow employee who is currently providing care and support to her widowed very fail mother, your colleague, a middle aged, divorced mother of two, states that the whole experience of care giving has made her much more aware of the costs of long term care and the difficulty associated with finding quality services. In particular, she expresses concern about her own ability to afford long term care for herself. At this point, basically her attitude is laissez-faire. “Why bother worrying” she says. “ I can’t afford to save and I can’t afford to retire. Let the state take care of me.”
How would you respond to her comment?
What information do you thing she needs, as a woman to provide her with a reality check?
What quality of life issues should she be considering if she is in need of long term care?
What advice would you give her about long term care insurance as a possible option to prepare for her future needs?

Some people you can't change. However, if you wish to pursue this you can debate it on 2 merits. One, the state may provide her with long term care, but she may be very unhappy about what it is the provide. There will be no gourmet meals and she will share a room with a least one other person if not two. She will be given a closet and a chest of drawers. That's it. Most nursing care have one nurses aid to 10-20 patients/inmates. The doctor may come everyday, but I doubt it. The main activities are sitting and watching tv. Maybe a park bench outside on good days. With people living longer, there is not a high turnover, so nursing homes are more crowded and the care for the most part is minimal. As far as extras, if you don't have the money, you don't get the extras. With Ins. paid out for long term care, provides for a nicer facility and better care. The meals are prepared by a professional dietitian and can make special foods for people who need it. Often they facility has suites for people and they can even have a bird or cat. They have their own kitchen and often a deck or sitting ares. These places have large gathering room and many daily activities. Nurses and Doctor's are available 24/7. Hair saloons and massage therapist are available. Often their are libraries, chapels and movie rooms. The ones I visit to see people often have a small bar and gift shop for extras. I think you can make a convincing argument with this.
