My 3 year old daughter has a UTI and now they want to do a VCUG which I really don't want done to her after only 1 UTI. Am I a bad parent if I decline it? Please keep in mind a few things that have gone on the past month....1. she is very independent and just started learning to wipe herself and also sneak to the bathroom without me or her dad knowing it so there are times we aren't there to make sure she's clean enough. 2. she broke her foot and was in a cast the past two weeks and was unable to have baths. the day after the cast came off she started with the UTI symptoms. It was very hard to clean her properly while being kicked with a cast.
Can it be possible that poor hygeine is the cause of this UTI. Her symptoms were 1.holding pee and having accidents which we assumed was because of the cast and not wanting to get up to go pee. 2. painful urination 3. the painful urination made her hold her poop in and would cry that she had a belly ache but after she would finally pee and poop she felt better.
She did not have a fever at all but a night before the first symptom of painful urination started she did vomit. However, she ate canned spaghetti and chicken soup so we assumed it was my husband's poor choice for supper that night.
Will it be harmful if I don't have this test done? Can't we wait to see if she ever gets another UTI?
Thanks so much for your time.

REPLIED Check Mark

You are within your rights to request to wait for a VCUG until she has had another UTI. It seems that there may be some special circumstances here that could have led to this one. However, if there is another one (her doctor should do a follow-up culture to make sure this UTI clears), it would definitely be best to have it done to make sure there aren't structural problems.

Meanwhile, to help decrease the possibilities of another UTI, help her learn to wipe front to back and don't allow bubble baths.

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. Can you just let me know one more thing....will it cause more damage to my daugther IF I DO NOT get this test and she actually DOES have kidney reflux and we don't catch it till the next UTI?
Thanks so much.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

I can't promise no damage. However, I can say that the pediatrician that I work for does not do invasive procedures such as this until there have been at least 2 UTIs. He is very responsible, and appropriately conservative, I think. It is a much more urgent problem if the child is an infant, but your daughter is 3. If she hasn't ever had a UTI before, it should be fine to wait.
