Question

erection problem?

Sent to Health Experts May 10, 2006 12:54 p.m.

I am 18 years old and for the past 5 years when I have come to an orgasm while masturbating I have squeezed the shaft of my penis to stop the exit of semen. I just recently stopped this practice, but I want to know if I have damaged my penis in any way from doing this. It seems that when I get an erection, my whole penis gets firm except for the head, which only gets firm after a while of masturbation and after my penis shaft has been erect for a while. I need to know if this practice I had been doing for 5 years has caused this (or if it's just a coincidence) or if this practice has any effect on my erections or the firmness or my erections. It would seem that it doesn't because I don't think the route for sperm would have anything to do with the erection of the penis but then again the pressure caused from this practice could have damaged something that plays a part in my erections. I am just very worried that I might have damaged something in there and would like to have proof that is scientifically backed that I did or did not, but if speculation based on your knowledge is all that you can give me I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much.

You most likely have not damaged yourself, but I would not recommend that you perform this practice of applying pressure to your penis during ejaculation (so I believe that it is good that you have stopped). You are correct that the route for the exit of ejaculate doesn't have anything to do with the firmness of your erection. It is, also, normal for the tip of the penis to be less firm than the shaft during erection. So your penis is most probably completely fine.

If you wish, you could always set an appointment with a urologist - these are physicians who specialize in the male genital system (among other things). They would be able to give you a thorough exam and confirm for you that everything is as it should be.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Take care.

Relist: I still need help.

One of the reasons I asked this question is because a lot of the time when my penis is erect, the head is not firm and takes a while before it starts to get hard. Like when I get an erection the penis will be erect for a few minutes and then the head will start to get erect, and this is sometimes when I'm close to orgasm anyway. Could my previous practice of masturbation have caused this? This has caused a problem in the past when my girlfriend and I have tried to have sex and because, while my penis was erect, the tip wasn't hard, we couldn't have sex. Is this process of erection I am having normal? Also, if the rest of the penis is hard, and just the head is not, is penetration still possible? Is the problem that my girlfriend is just too tight or is the problem that I do not have a hard penis head when we're about to have sex?
