The reason I asked about your due date is that effacement and dilation have very different significance if they begin before the 27th week.
As you are within weeks of your estimated due date, your cervix is beginning to soften, and slowly dilate and become effaced. It is very common to dilate as much as three cm, and may present 100% effaced before true labor begins. The discharge you are seeing is the mucous plug. You may begin to see some bloody show with the mucous, which is also normal
This stage is considered “pre labor”, and yours is right on course. It is not, however an actual predictor that labor is imminent. Many women (me included) exhibit significant dilation and effacement and then go past their due date, or need to be induced.
Your Doctor’s reaction to your progression was probably intended to delay labor past the 37th week. Though babies can survive much earlier, Week 37 is considered full term, and the beginning of the optimal window for labor and delivery.
His reference to an “aggressive exam” probably just meant he would do an internal exam, some lab work and possible an external and/or internal ultrasound. Nothing you mentioned indicated a need for more invasive tests like an amniocentesis, or need for a c-section, so maybe aggressive was too strong of a word.
In some cases Doctor’s will manually stretch and massage the cervix slightly to actually encourage progression, or use Pitocin to induce labor. Alternately, the Doctor has the option of admitting you for full bed rest and IV fluids and medication to postpone labor. These are both interventions used only when mother or baby is at risk and you did not mention any complications or concerns that would warrant that.
I can’t provide a dependable schedule for your progression, but I would have my overnight bag packed, and be ready to meet your little angel within 7-10 days if not Friday!
Please feel free to ask if you have more questions or concerns I did not address; otherwise congratulations and good luck to you and your family.
