My husbands urine for a very long time is very dark in color and the smell is overwhelming. It smells like iron. What could this be?

Hello

Dark colored urine can be a sign of blood in the urine. Since it smells like iron, this would be my guess. It can also indicate liver problems. If his stools are also light in color and the urine dark, that's a symptom of liver failure.

I would strongly encourage him to find out what the source of the bleeding is, if that is the case. Either way it needs to be investigated. It could be his prostate.

This has been going on for atleast a year. There isn't any blood and the color of his bowels vary. I will say it seems he has frequent urination and it just smells like iron so bad. The only thing I can add is wondering if pop would be a factor? He drinks alot of pop. If so, should we still have his liver and prostate checked?
