Swollen lymph nodes can be a sign of bacterial or viral infection, some blood disorders, some inflammatory disorders and more serious conditions including cancers and lymphoma.

Apart from taking anti-inflammatory medication, there is nothing you can do for the swelling as the swelling is due to increased number of blood cells fighting the bacteria or viral infection.

If you have had swollen lymph glands for more than a couple of weeks then do go and see your doctor.

Your body is fighting a bacterial or viral infection. Treatment is local anaesthetic lozenges, tylenol or ibuprofen for the pain. But ear infections should be seen by a doctor due to risk of perforated ear drum.

If you are otherwise healthy and eat plenty of fruit and vegtables then your immune system will continue to fight this off. If it is viral then antibiotics would be useless anyway, however the concern is the ear problem. I cannot make any statement as to this as your eardrum really needs to be examined.

If the ear is not too painful then you could wait a total of 5 days from onset of sore throat and if throat is still painful then see a doctor then.
