This might be a learned behavior. Meaning that he is used to getting water and attention when he awakens? I'm not saying that is a bad thing, but it is possible.
Also, if he is thirsty and urinating a lot you might want to ask the doctor to rule out physical problems such as diabetes.
Before something is deemed to be behavioral, a thorough physical exam is in order to be sure it isn't something physical.
