I wanted to find out a little bit more, my feeling from your description is that the symptoms do sound like Interstitial Cystitis, however you were concerned about taking a new medication for this. Was there a specific reason why you were concerned about the side effects? Many drugs have a long list of side effects, but not everyone will experience them. Unfortuantly because the side effects have to be listed if reported, then many people get very worried about side effects without need.
The other thought I had about your problem was bladder muscle related. And there is a condition called Overactive Bladder which apeared to have some common symptoms. Thats why I wanted to know how you got on with Ditropan.
Also if your urine is very concentrated (due to low fluid intake) then it triggers the bladder to empty more frequently. Some individuals find that when they ensure their urine is dilute, many of their symptoms improve however if the bladder is only used to holding small quantities it would need to be 'retrained' to hold more volume without triggering the need to micturate.
Self catheterisation should only be used in cases where there is an inability to pass at all. There is a danger of introducing more infection with these procedures but it has got its place for some cases.
Does this help at all?
