Question

I have been going to the doctor now for close to six ...

Sent to Health Experts June 13, 2006 2:24 p.m.

I have been going to the doctor now for close to six months for urination problems. I was on antibiotic after antibiotic and nothing seems to have helped. I already saw a urologist and he says that he cannot find anything wrong with me so he thinks it is intestinal cystitis but he doesn't know. I am not trying elmiron until I know for sure what my condition is instead of taking a dangerous perscription that has so many known side effect. I contantly have to go use the restroom, dirrhae, pushing on my bladdr to urinate, and not getting much sleep at night by having to get up either before I go to bed and when I wake up and during the night too. What can be done to eliminate my problems without having to use dangerous drugs and finding out what I have. The doctor said he looked in with a sythiscope and said he found nothing and that my prostate was fine, then what could be the problem and why isn't antibiotics helping? What can be done, I am only a 25 year old male and I shouldn't have these kinds of problems at such an early stage in my life.

Optional Information:
Male , Age: 25

Already Tried:
Leviquin, Bactrum, Cipro, Saw Palmetto, Detrol, Ditropan, and many many other antibiotics that have not worked

Can I ask some questions about your urine output?

Can you describe the colour of the urine, is there any assocated smell, cloudiness, burning?

How much fluid do you drink?

How much fluid are you passing as urine?

Were your samples cultured for bacteria?

Thanks

Thanks

The color of my urine is normal yellow I guess like it should be. I always have the smell of my urine though in my nose all day that smells really bad. I just drink about 3-4 glasses a day but then I immediately have to go empty it out right away. When I do drink about 8-9 glasses of water a day then I go about 50 times in a day. I don't drink cokes or anything that the doctor said will upset it even worse. I constantly have to bend over sometimes to empty my bladder and push to drain the last drop up until I go to bed and then at night I have to wake up about 2-3 times and then wake up first thing in the morning and I cannot go to sleep because I have a more sensation to have to go use the restroom and go diarrhea about twice or even three times in the morning and then I cannot go back to sleep. My samples were cultured and they said they couldn't find anything wrong and my urologist said that if it was a bacteria then antibiotics would have killed it a long time ago. They did do a semen analysis and said they found a bacteria and persribed me an antibiotic but it never helped my symptoms in any way. What is wrong with me and why do I have these problems and are they going to be like this forever?

Thanks for the information.

Have you had any scans using contrast media?

I notice you tried ditropan. Did that help in any way?

Have you ever tried self-catheterisation?

How is the rest of your health? Do you take any medication for other problems?

You did not answer my question but sent me another question. You cannot answer a question with another question. The answer is yes I have had a sythescope where the urologist looked inside to see my urine, bladder, and prostate and said he didn't find anything. I am currently taking herbs for my problem because they have no known side effects. One herb in particular helped the most which was called Beta Sisterol which is 3000 times more powerful than saw palmetto but I stopped taking it a couple of weeks ago when I talked to the person over the phone that said I would have to take this for practicly my entire life. It did help though but only somewhat during the day but when it came to night I had to go again and again. I am not taking anything besides 100% safe herbs or vitamins that won't give me any worse symptoms like this problem. I do notice that my condition worsenesd with more antibiotics I took over time, I don't know why though. No I have not tried self-catheterization but I don't know if I should because it might cause me harm or more serious side effects.

I wanted to find out a little bit more, my feeling from your description is that the symptoms do sound like Interstitial Cystitis, however you were concerned about taking a new medication for this. Was there a specific reason why you were concerned about the side effects? Many drugs have a long list of side effects, but not everyone will experience them. Unfortuantly because the side effects have to be listed if reported, then many people get very worried about side effects without need.

The other thought I had about your problem was bladder muscle related. And there is a condition called Overactive Bladder which apeared to have some common symptoms. Thats why I wanted to know how you got on with Ditropan.

Also if your urine is very concentrated (due to low fluid intake) then it triggers the bladder to empty more frequently. Some individuals find that when they ensure their urine is dilute, many of their symptoms improve however if the bladder is only used to holding small quantities it would need to be 'retrained' to hold more volume without triggering the need to micturate.

Self catheterisation should only be used in cases where there is an inability to pass at all. There is a danger of introducing more infection with these procedures but it has got its place for some cases.

Does this help at all?

No you still did not answer my question. Can I use any other alternative medicines besides elmiron if in fact I do have intestinal cystitis. And how can my urologist tell I have this because he doesn't even know what I have. A month ago he said I had prostatitis and now he said I have this, I don't think he knows what the hell he is talking about. This problem has been going on for six months and I just want to know how to make it go away for good. It all started on January 1st (New Years) when I ate at a mexican restrauant and went to bed really late while waking up several times at night to use the restroom. If this is indeed a bacteria and antibiotics aren't helping then what guaratee in hell do I have that this indeed intestinal cystitis and elmiron will work. The urologist already said that there are numerous people with this condition and that it is untreatable then my question is why give me elmiron in the first place.
