Folic acid is used to help treat certain anemias, liver disease, alcoholism, kidney and dialysis patients and certain intestional tract and stomach problems so yes most likely the reason they told you to use this was due to the problems within your liver. Folic acid is a vitamin b complex and can help to form healthy cells, especially red blood cells as well, so make sure and follow his directions and start this suppliment as soon as possible as it can help to prevent your liver from becoming further damaged.

It can be damaged enough to cause liver failure but if they have not recommended anything except to start the folic acid then most likely your liver is only slightly damaged at this point and they are using the folic acid to help prevent further damage to your liver.
