Coumadin is a blood thinner (anti-coagulant)

A blood specialist who is an expert in the clotting mechanism of blood and how coumadin works is a Hematalogist.

Having said that, it is usually general medical doctors, internists, cardiologists etc. who prescribe coumadin for disorders to treat or prevent clots. Although a hematologist is a blood specialist, they generally are not prescribing coumadin as much as other types of doctors.

Hope this helps

Reply to Dr. F.'s Post: I recently had 5 units of blood due to complications of TURP surgery? Can this give you night sweats?

Generally No.

Some people have a reaction during the blood transfusion where they get a fever, or if the blood is not compatible they have a serious reaction DURING the administration.

The night sweats should not be from the blood transfusions. Night seats can reflect an infection. You should check your temperature between 4PM and midnight which is when fever usually goes up and also when you have the night sweats. If you do have any fever or feel sick, you should see your medical physician to get some blood work checked.

I'm not sure how this is connected to Coumadin. Coumadin, by the way will NOT give you night sweats either.

Hope this helps
