Question

Is it possible for me to make me get my period early?

Sent to Health Experts July 17, 2006 4:47 p.m.

I am currently on the pill. Can I take the hormones for two weeks, not three, and get my period a week early as opposed to skipping it all together? I am going on vacation and I don't want to ruin it by getting my period.

Thank you for your question!

Many women do manipulate their menstural cycle to avoid getting their period during special occassions. You should check with your doctor before doing so, and only do so if you are on a low hormone pill.

Your best option is to simply skip the week off pills and continue on to a new pack with active pills (again this is really only recommended if you are on a low hormone pill). This way you would avoid your period during your vacation and basically not have a period for 6 weeks. When you do finally have your period it may be a bit heavier than usual.

Is it ok to skip two periods in a row? I believe I am on taking Crystelle.

Most doctors will say that it is okay to skip two periods in a row, or to effectively have a period once every 3 months. Again, you should double check with your doctor before doing this, but it's becoming a much more common and accepted practice.

I am not familiar with a birth control pill called Crystelle - if you want to double check the name and get back to me, I would be happy to help you further. Otherwise you may want to call your doctor or his/her nurses aid directly about your skipping your period.

Have a fun vacation!

Sorry, it's called Cryselle. It's the generic for Lo-Ovral 28 pill pack.

Thanks for the clarification.

This is a low hormone birth control pill, so skipping the off week pills should be fine. Again, you should double check with your doctor, but unless you have a history of problems with your menstruation cycle he/she should approve such an option.

Best Regards,

Emily
