I have HSV2 and have just entered a serious relationship for the first time in five years. I have shared this news with the person I'm interested in and he is willing to continue the relationship but would like to know how we can have sex as safely as we possible can. What can we do to minimize the risk of my passing this on to him?

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy),

First of all, I want to commend you on your honesty to your partner regarding your STD....many people keep this information from their partners and risk infecting them.

Safe sex with HSV2:

(1) Avoid having sex all together when you are having symptoms.

(2) ALWAYS use condoms consistently (which are highly protective, although not fool-proof.) This includes with oral sex or petting. Female condoms are available and can be found in many drugstores or adult shops.

(3) Talk to your doctor about starting antiviral therapy. Consistent use of any 2 of these methods is highly protective. Remember though, that aside from total abstinence, no safe-sex practices are 100% effective.
