my husband has copd and the doctor told him he had an alavated left ventricle what does this mean?

Hello,

The human heart has four chambers - 2 auricles and 2 ventricles. The left ventricle is the chamber that pumps oxygenated blood from the heart into the rest of the body. You can see a pictur of the heart here:

In COPD, the pulmonary blood pressure, that is the pressure of the blood moving inside the arteries of the lungs is increased. This is called pulmonary hypertension and is very common in people with COPD. Since the blood from these arteries flows into the left ventricle, the pressure inside the ventricle is also increased. This causes a growth of the ventricular muscles to cope with the pressure. This hypertrophied muscles find it difficult to contract properly and push the blood throught he body. In time, the muscle can get fatigued and fail to work.

I believe that the doctor mentioned an elevated left ventricular pressure secondary to COPD. He will need to be under constant supervision for treatment of his condition.
