Question

Hysterectomy

Sent to Health Experts July 26, 2006 6:27 p.m.

I had a Hysterectomy 6 years ago and they left the ovaries. I still have cysts (I can feel when they burst). Do I need to have an ultra sound to make sure they are ok, or do they just eventually dry up and you do not have to worry about them.?

REPLIED Check Mark

benniebishop,

Functional ovarian cysts typically disappear within two months without any treatment. If you have any cysts that are larger than 6 cm or they have been persisting for more than six weeks, your doctor will recommend surgery. When an ovarian cyst ruptures, the fluid gets reabsorbed by the body. Birth control pills are typically used to help prevent functional cysts from forming.

So having an Ultrasound to see if my Overies are ok is not something I need to do?

Customer (name blocked for privacy),

Has your doctor discussed with you about using birth control pills to help stop cysts from forming? Your doctor may periodically do ultrasounds, plus he may also do a CA125 blood test to screen for tumors.
