Question

Hydrocodone addicted?

Sent to Health Experts July 26, 2006 7:01 p.m.

Hi, after two years of backproblems due to a injury, and taking Hydrocodone 10/500 I had surgery and don't need the medication for pain anymore. BUT I try to get off. I'm down from 4 - 6 a day, to one, maybe two a day. I can not manage dropping the final two tablets. I'm very weak, very difficult to function. I can not sleep. So I have been taking the two tablets in the morning, and at night. This works very well, but I should get off them, but I need something which keeps me "UP" as I would take Hydrocodone. My doctor can not get a handle on it, or just don't care. If I stay on two a day, how will this affect my health? I'm a female, going on 66, dont drink, don't smoke, don't do other adictive drugs. When I called a local drug center, the told me that I have to commit myself in order for them to help me. I'm afraid that the "hook" me on something else, and I don't think I need to take this step, because so far, I have been doing ok, accept for the final two pills I still need. What can I do? Please, now that I have finaly no more back pain, and I had major surgery with a lot of hardware in my back, but the surgery was so succesful, that I don't need pain medication.
I need help in some way.
Thank you so much

Dear Ulrike-

You are definitely not alone - many people who have taken Hydrocodone (and similar pain pills) face problems getting entirely off the medication.

One of the first things you need to be aware of is that you are taking a compound that contains 500 mgs of acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is known to cause liver problems, particularly after long term ingestion. The maximum you should ingest daily is 4,000 mgs - it sounds like you're not taking this much now, but you are still ingesting enough to be concerned.

The second thing you need to know is that prolonged use of Hydrocodone eventually changes the brain in fundamental and long-lasting ways (this helps to explain why people cannot just quit on their own, and why treatment is essential) - the sooner you stop, the sooner your brain will be able to revert back to a healthy way of dealing with pleasure/pain/etc.

It's very sad to hear that your doctor doesn't seem to care about this issue. And I understand your concern about going to a treatment center. My advice is to try talking to your doctor again - he/she may suggest reasonable alternatives to Hydrocodone to help you detox from the drug (detox will be necessary, since, as you know, you will experience side effects when/if you stop taking Hydrocodone entirely). If your doctor is of no help, call the treatment center again and see what their typical detox/treatment program consists of. It is very unlikely they will give you a substitute drug for more than a few days (just to help you get over the worst of the side effects of getting off the Hydrocodone).
