Do I need to be concerned about swollen ankles?
Sent to Health Experts August 16 06:15 PM

my ankles swell often during the day. I try drinking water and exercise in the evening to get my circulation going. I will prop my feet up at night and these things seem to help but then the next day they swell again - I sit most of the day at work. Do I need to be concerned and what else might I be able to do that would keep this from happening all the time?

Hi,

Sitting or standing long time can make your ankle swell . It is called Orthostatic Edema. It is caused by the leakage of the blood water inside the tissues under the skin inside the ankles due to gravity pressure. Cutting salt intake, elevating the legs , wearing support stockings can bring the swelling down. If it persists your doctor can prescribe you small dose of diuretic.
