Infected wound

Sent to Health Experts August 17 08:08 PM

3 x 4 mm friction burn/graze non healing after 3 weeks despite daliy treatment with hydrogen peroxide, warm salt solution, also honey & 2 weeks of physician prescribed anitibiotic (sulfamethoxazole & trimethoprim). Wound surrounded by about 3/4 inch of red inflammation, slightly reduced since onset. Loose band aid used to allow access by air. Recommendations for alternative treatments such as colloidal silver or other types of honey (both said to be effective even against MRSM)?

Reply to James's Post: Some initial pus but mainly dried up after a few days. The doctor said she would take a culture but must have forgotton to take a swab. This was a temporary doctor I saw when my own was on vacation. Looking forward to your suggestions.

Since it has been this long going on, I recommend that the doctor take a culture of this wound as soon as possible. There is a possibility that this infection is caused by a type of bacteria that is resistant to common antibiotics. If you still have the infection after 2 weeks of this antibiotic then I would say this is the case. The culture will tell what type of bacteria this is, wether it is resistant or not, and what types of antibiotics will work if it is resistant.

Reply to James's Post: Thanks, that's the safe type of answer I would expect but you have given no comment on my remarks about the efficacy of colloidal silver or certain types of honey. My own understanding is that these are even effective against the superbug MRSM so I was wondering if treatment with these would avoid otherwise more expensive on-going fees for a doctor & lab tests.

I understand your concern about the costs and motions of going to a doctor for more tests. First, let's start with the colloidal silver. This product is claimed to be effective for minor burns and against bacteria but there is no proof as to how safe this remedy is or how well it does against persistent infections or the effects of long term usage.
The honey remedy (hanuka honey?) is a great deal more documented and I have heard many great things about it's effectiveness against bacteria.
However, per my training and experience, you should be properly evaluated and tested by a doctor before using these. Given the longevity of your infection/non healing wound, I would say that it would be best to have professional treatment. And if not treatment, at least an accurate diagnosis. I hope this helps and I wish that I had more insight into these herbal remedies but I haven't had much interaction with them. See a doctor. Remember, the worst thing you can do is to treat yourself without an accurate diagnosis.
