Question

Exteme Constipation and Lower-Back Pain

Sent to Health Experts August 31, 2006 9:41 a.m.

This issue relates primary to constipation (extreme) issue. Now for the rest of the story.

1-3 times per year, I do something physically which creates lower back problems. My hip gets out of whack and with the right Chiropractic care, one adjustment from one visit makes it all go away.

8 weeks ago, my wife went into the hospital and tossed my life out of control and my young daughters as well. We went through quite an ordeal as she was in the hospital for 2 weeks. After she returned home, we started having people stay with us, the first week family, the second and third week, someone I didn't know that was filling a Nanny role. Into the second week my wife was back home (1st week of Nanny) I started to realize some constipation issues. I signed it off as my typical "staying at someone elses house constipation issues I typically have" since I felt like a stranger in my own home with a stranger living in my house.

The Nanny commented that my 20 month old daughter had went 3-days without a bowel moment, but finally had one on the 4th day. Since most in the family believer she takes after me in just about every way genes wise, I could relate to her issues. ;)

Things seemed to ease up and I didn't think much about it, until 2 weeks later I started waking up in the morning with lower-back pain that went away as the morning progressed. That was for two mornings, but the third, I was in extreme lower back pain that reminded me of my typical hip issue I have. But, oddly enough, I felt like I was having constipation issues. Never having taken a Laxiative (only memory is from my single digit years) I decided to take Ex-Lax. The directions say relief in 6-12 hours. 12 hours went by and then nothing, but some bubbling in my gut and gas. Finally around 13 hours, I was able to go. While I didn't think much of it at the time, but everything that come out, it's diameter was about the size of my index finger. The back pain and constipation went on from that Tuesday and on Saturday I went into my Chiropractor for an adjustment and he said my pain was in the same place I always complain about, he did the adjustment and things seemed to snap back in place and I noticed instant release of some of the pin-pointed pain I was having.

However, the pain, overall in my lower-back continued. Then I started realizing that I hadn't had a good bowel moment since the Ex-Lax episode 4-5 days earlier. The times I felt I had to go, I ended up with nothing. If I was lucky to get anything out, it was very small and took a great strain to get out.

I started then connecting my lower-back pain (especially while sitting) with my constipation issue, and didn't know if they where one in the same or separate issues. I called my GP, but he was out for 3 days. I decided to try something I have never done before, a supository. It said relief in 15 minutes to 1 hour. Well, 15 minutes passed, 1 hour passed. Nothing. I went to work and decided I need to see any doctor I could. I went to a on campus (business campus) full fledged doctor facility and saw the Doc. He said my lower back and constipation issues where probably seperate. He ran X-Rays and said I was full of stool, performed a rectal exam and said I had hard stool up inside that he could feel and prescribed muscle relaxers for my back and wanted me to take Magnesium Citrate (over the counter), 2 bottles, over the course of 2-days. I took the first half as described and a few hours went by, nothing. I took the second half of the bottle and nothing. Called back into the Doc and they suggested I try a Fleet Enema. Well, it took them several hours to get back and I was on the second day and decided to go for the full second bottle. No luck.

After I tried the Fleet Enema, I finally started to have some relief. Of the course of the rest of that day, I had pretty much explosive stuff coming out in different battles throughout the day. Nothing large at all. Granted, as much stuff to soften my stool I had in me and as bloated as I was, I didn't expect anything large. So, finally, I had relief, back still in dyre straights.

The next day, I feel like I have to go again and nothing. The most I can ever get out is a little peice of stool. I have to strain to get it out. I feel like something is in there and wants to come out, but its not budging.

I go in for another adjustment today for my back and I have an appointment with my GP tomorrow.

I have read that tumors could be causing what I am having (Im 32) or fecal impaction. My best guess would be the later as my problem. I am curious if I should just go to the ER to get this issue resolved once and for all, or if I should give another go around to my GP. I have also read that fecal impaction could be causing it to sit on a nerve which could be causing my ongoing lower-back issues.

On top of all this, I've had a cold/flu for 4 days. My wife and family need my support and I need my own support network to take care of me and it doesn't exist. I can't deal with the pain any longer. The muscle relaxers didn't do squat. The Doc recommened 200mg of Ibrophane, but that was balogne cause I had told him that Advile, Aleive and Tylonal, didn't fix the pain. My only pain relief was last night that after taking 600mg of Advil with no relief, 2 hours later I took 1500mg of Tylonal and for the first time, I could sit without being uncomfortable. Although, I could still fill the "strain" of the pain, it didn't hurt.

What advice do you have for me when I see the GP tomorrow? What should I tell him, recommend or insist upon? We are coming up to a holiday weekend and I need this issue resolved once and for all!

Good Morning Customer (name blocked for privacy),

It sounds like this is making your miserable! At this point, I think you should see a gastrointestinal doctor as you may have a bowel obstruction and it sounds like severely impacted bowel. With all the things you've done, you shouldn't still be suffering in this manner. A GI doc will definitely do another digital rectal exam, and may want to do a barium enema xray to take a look at how things are moving. I would do this as soon as possible to avoid serious complications. In the meantime, avoid any food that contains little or no fiber, drink a lot of water and fruit juice. If you feel the need to move your bowels, but nothing comes out, then you don't need a stimulant laxative like Ex-lax, you need a lubricant laxative like mineral oil. Milk of magnesia, I think you said you used this too, is a saline laxative that increases the salt in the feces. But I would make that call soon and see if they can get you in quickly so you can get some relief from this and properly care for your family.
