Question

Please try to tell me whats the matter with me.

Sent to Health Experts September 07, 2006 7:52 p.m.

Do you know the saying "like nails on a chalkboard"? Well I think somethings more wrong with me than even that sound. Since I was very young I have experienced pain even at the thought of this and many other sounds or feelings. For instance: If someone scrapes their teeth with their fork or spoon while eating this causes me actual physical pain, I can't eat around other people in public unless i annoyingly ask them over and over to remember to use their lips, any metal scraping on metal or teeth, fingernails bending back or just scraping anything sends shooting pain through my teeth and through my face and I have to clench my fists because of the pain in my fingers. Going to the dentist is my ultimate nightmare and even writing this is causing me some pain. I always thought the whole thing was pretty normal because i know a few other people who say they can't stand the metal scraping sound as well. Whatever this is its starting to effect my day to day life in a very negative way and has bothered my husband and family for a while and it seems to be getting worse. I guess my question is; Is there a name for this and perhaps something that can ease the pain or even cure this problem?   Please help at this point I'm desperate...

Hi Brittney-

It is possible you have overly sensitive hearing. If you have not been to the doctor about this matter, do so immediately. The fact that this is beginning to interfere with your daily living is quite significant, and indicates that you should be seeking professional help.

If your doctor cannot find anything physically wrong with you, he/she may refer you to a therapist. Possibly you are suffering from anxiety (it definitely sounds like what was once a more minor issue has become more major for you - possibly through a conditioning reflex of your body) involving the possibility of coming into contact with the sound. Ideally cognitive-behavioral therapy will help you cope with the pain and fear associated with the sounds.

If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Sincerely,
Emily
