My son who is 32 yrs old, in the past year has had kidney

My son who is 32 yrs old, in the past year has had kidney stones three times. Luckily he has been able to pass them on his own. This last time though a week before the pain from the stone came, he had a dull aching pain on his side, then a burning that would quit as soon as he would go to urinate. There is no pain urinating, just before, he quit drinking sodas, and for the last two weeks has had only cranberry juice and water. Now for the third time the burning has gone and now the severe pain is back. It is always on the right side. Is it common to have kidney stones this often?

No he has not seen a doctor yet, he has just started a new job and he doesn't have any insurance yet.
