Hello,

If your husband can feel the tip of it, then it means that the IUD is beginning to come out. It also means that you are not well protected against pregnancy. You bleed during sex because the tip of the IUD rubs against the edge of the cervix.

You will have to get it reinserted. Please consult your doctor about it.

I hope this helps.

Reply to Dr.M.D.Mazumdar, MD(OS Post: can this IUD rubbing on my cervix cause damage permanently? and is it possible that this was put in wrong? if he could always feel the tip? is there a better birth control that won't make me gain weight? wouldn't i also have pain with this IUD coming out? i mean I'm just curious. i don't have any pain at all after sex . could this be an infection? or am i worrying to much about that? what about headaches after sex? is that common? some times i get really bad head aches after we have had sex is that due to orgasm?

Hello,

The IUD rubbing on your cervix will not cause permanent damage. It will cause a bruise which can get infected (which is what is happening to you now) and bleed. Once the IUD is removed, you will need to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines. You can safely get another IUD re-inserted after 1 month.

If your husband could feel the IUD from the time it was inserted, then it is likely that it was not put in deeply enough. Occasionally, however, the uterine contractions (cramps) that occur during the periods can push out an IUD. This takes a few months after the insertion to occur.

You may not have any pain at all while the IUD is coming out. You will not even feel the movement. The uterus is not a very sensitive organ. Sensory nerve supply is very minimal - the reason why it can grow to such a big size during pregnancy without causing much discomfort.

The two main birth control methods that have their action at the local site and do not affect the whole body are condoms and IUDs. Other birth control methods that act locally are the vaginal sponge, cervical caps, female diaphragms - these are not very comfortable and the failure rates is also comparatively high. Pills as you aware, contain hormones that can increase the weight.

I feel that the IUD is an ideal contraceptive. Since you have had no major problems except that it is beginning to come out, I feel that you can continue with this type of birth control - just get this one removed, use antibiotics, wait for one month and then get a new one inserted.

I hope this helps.
