my boyfriend has had extreme back pains for the last 3 ...

my boyfriend has had extreme back pains for the last 3 days. He has been in bed all the time and his doctor presribed Naproxen 500 mg but the pain has not subsided. He tried to walk to the Bathroom today and experienced sharp pain in his left side and back. He dosen't want to go to the emergency room for fear of them putting him in the hospital.
What should we do?
