Question

Bloody stools

Sent to Health Experts September 14, 2006 10:18 a.m.

My wife is having bloody stools, she has these 3,4, and sometimes 5 or more daily. All that comes out is blood, and clots. She went in to see a doctor and they had her do a colonoscopy and found nothing. For a time, she had normal bal movments. We think it was because of the intestinal cleansing she did prior to the proceedure. Anyway, this has been going on for several months now, and we are concerned. We think this may be because of the birth control she is taking for her irregular period. She was fine a while back when taking Yasmin, but she had to switch and we think that that was some time later that her bleeding started. Thus we think that it may be the type of birth control she is taking. Are we wrong?

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hi Customer (name blocked for privacy)-

The blood is not likely from the birth control pills. Your wife needs to go back to her doctor ASAP to have further tests done. She needs to have an endoscopy conducted to rule out upper GI tract bleeding (the colonscopy only examines the lower intestine). Her doctor may order additional tests as well, or refer her to a specalist.

It's very important that she learns where the bleeding is coming from. If her doctor is unable to find a cause, have your wife ask to be referred to a specalist. There could be a number of explinations for the bleeding, including:

* Hemorrhoids (which likely would have been discovered during the colonscopy, but the doctor should double check),

* Ulcers,

* Diverticulitis,

* Intestional infections, and

* Irritable Bowl Disease.
