What type of doctor is primarily focused on the leg, specifically the knees and calves? My mother had skin cancer around her ankles about 2 years ago and its all gone, but her legs continuosly ache to the point that she can't get any sleep. She is lucky if she gets 2 hours. She says it hurts the most in her knees and in her calves. The doctors have said that it is a circulation problem but haven't done anything about it. Help!!!

It is very likely that your mother is having this discomfort as a result of her excess weight. If it is a circulatory problem caused by her weight, the treatment is weight loss. If she has swelling from the poor circulation, she will have pain as well. She may also have arthritis in her knees from the weight.

HOWEVER, I would encourage her to start with a COMPLETE evaluation by a doctor. Really her primary care doctor can start this evaluation. She should have her knees and legs x-rayed to identify her problem. Sometimes, support stockings help with the circulation and pain. These must be professionally fitted though. Also, the circulation in her legs should be assessed by ultrasound (called "doppler studies").

She is severely overweight and anyone battling obesity doesn't have to be told that! At this level of obesity, she may want to consider gasrtic bypass surgery if she is not able to lose the weght on her own. If her pain is from the weight, it is likely that it will not improve without weight loss. It may actually get worse to the point where she needs surgery in the future. She is fortunate to have you looking out for her.

Finally, insist on a complete evaluation of her legs even though the most obvious cause is her weight. Don't accept "just lose weight" as an answer. You must be sure that there is no other treatable problem.

Reply to Nancy's Post: Thank you so much. Is there any kind of over the counter medicine that she could take to help with the pain. Advil doesn't really help.

Well.....she can take Tylenol Arthritis WITH the Advil. That may give her more relief. The prescription dose of Advil is up to 800 mg twice a day. That would be 4 200 mg tablets. She should not increase to this dosage if she has any stomach problems with the Advil and she should always take it with food. Speak with her doctor about using the prescription dose of Advil. Combining the 2 medications may help her.
