Ankle Swelling and Bruising Above Ankle Area
Sent to Health Experts September 22 10:07 AM

Please help! I have recently been experiencing (off and on the last couple of months) ankle swelling in the evenings. Also, I am very concerned about some spots (they appear to be bruises) that have appeared in various places on my lower leg (in the lower shin area -- on both legs (and have stayed there for a few months now) ... the right leg more than the left. I am planning on calling my doctor today. I am 40 yrs old, 5'4" and weight about 129 lbs., so I am not overweight. I exercise 4-6 days a week (and have been exercising at least 3 days a week for many years). I was doing a lot of running (including sprinting) on the treadmill during the summer, but thought that might somehow be part of the problem, so I have slowed the running down and have been doing low intensity aerobics w/weights (The Firm series), with a light treadmill work. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

Any dependent positions such as sitting or standing can cause the swelling of the ankles. Cutting salt intake and elevating the leg can bring the swelling down. For the bruises you may need to see a doctor to rule out low platelet count , liver disease or diseases causing platelet dysfunction like Von Willebrandt's disease.
