Switch in birthcontrol - could I be pregnant?

Sent to Health Experts September 28 11:27 AM

Hello!
I am a 19 year old, sexually active female.
I am on Ortho Tricyclen Lo (a switch from regular Ortho about 3 months ago). When I switched, I never skipped a month or anything, just one month it was regular - the next Lo.
I have been concerned with pregnancy (as every sexually active person should be) even though my partner has never ejaculated in me or anything like that.
This period that I am currently on and my previous one have been noticeably lighter with fewer cramps.
I use to have to use "super" size tampons for the first few days (Tuesday night, Wednesday and part of Thursday) then "regular" (Thursday and Friday) and "light" on my last day (Saturday). But now, I'm starting about 12-16 hours later than I use to, and I can use a "regular" size tampon for 8 hours without even getting near leaking or using it completely.
Is this just because I'm on a lighter birth control, or what?
What I'm basically scared of is pregnancy (ectopic or otherwise) because I have heard of the rare condition that you can have your period while still pregnant.

Please help!

Switching to a different BCP can change how your cycle is. It may be this way due to the low dosage of hormone you are now getting. It does generally take about 3 months for your body to get use to a new form of BC that is hormone related. However if it were me just to be on the safe side, I would follow up with your doctor for a blood test just to check for pregnancy. Sounds as though what you are going through is just due to the BCP, but I would suggest in just getting tested to confirm. As a blood test is much more sensitive than any home test you can get. If the test comes back Neg- then you are good to go and this is how your period may be on this BC you are taking, which is normal for some woman.

Hope this helps, If you need anything else please feel free to ask. If you found this helpful don't forget to click the *ACCEPT* button and leave *POSITIVE* feedback.

Reply to Lindie's Post: I've been having a lot of blood tests and urine tests done lately due to reoccuring UTIs.
I still should get another test done?
Do they not check for pregnancy or notice pregnancy unless they are looking for it??

If you have been having a lot of UTI's, this can also cause what you are having as well. Unless they are running a test specifically checking for pregnancy, it won't just show up for the lab to tell. And chances are with you being on the pill, your doctor probably didn't order the test. However if you are unsure if your doctor actually tested for pregnancy, I would give his office a call and just ask the nurse there if they by any chance ran a pregnancy test just to check. If they had, then just know the UTIs and the change in BC is and can cause what you are going through. So if thats the case, give it a couple more months, and keep taking your pill every day and try to do it the same time each day and your body should adjust as Ortho Lo is a good BCP.

Hope this helps Hun

Because, even though I've been "safe"... I always scare myself.
