Extremity fractures are a common injury. Treatment involves lengthy periods of immobilization. A Gortex cast liner may be considered for an active patient who is keen to return to limited activities during fracture healing. Apparently because of a lack of knowledge of their existence, physicians currently are underutilizing this method of casting in active patients. The use of Gortex liners elsewhere has been reported to have higher patient and physician satisfaction in both use and performance, with no reported detrimental effects on outcome. http://www.wemjournal.org/wmsonline/?request=get-document&issn=1080-6032&volume=014&issue=03&page=0167

Reply to Dr. Hanson's Post: So does this mean I ask the Physcian for a Gortex cast for his arm so he can return to playing? He wouldn't go to the hospital last night and continued playing thru about 3 more tackles before the pain was too intense, wouldn't go to have it x-rayed until Sat. at 5pm. So he has a very high pain tollerance level, and wants to play. If he has to has stated he'll cut a cast down and pad it to play.

Yes. Telephone your doctor so that you are sure that they have the Gortex casting material before you go for your appointment or you might have to return because they may not have it in their usual casting area supplies. It's a lighter-weight cast and is made of a special material that can be worn in water.
