My 3 month old has very black stool and I am

My 3 month old has very black stool and I am concerned. I called the oncall doctor and she said to go to the ER but before we called, we threw the diaper away. I asked that if we go to the ER, wouldn't they want to see the black stool and she to possibly wait but that we should go the ER. What does this possibly mean?
