My daughter is 13months old and she has had very dry nappies over the last 2 weeks. What could it be?

Very dry nappies is a sign of dehydration. If this has gone on for 2 weeks then you may want to discuss this with your doctor.

The very least you can do would be to increase her fluid intake of water straight away. If the urine is strong smelling then her doctor may want a sample to rule out bacterial infection, or if there has been a low grade fever, this would also indicate possible infection.

Has there been a change in her diet, or any new medication?

Reply to Pauline's Post: She has had no change in her diet and her fluid intake a day is around 5 - 7 beakers per day and is very thirsty every time she drinks.

Reply to Pauline's Post: Her bowel movements have remain the same, she has about 1-2 a day. She is currently waking every morning very upset. But generally within herself she is fine, maybe a little pale and sometimes looks slightly yellow.

I would like you to see her paediatrician. Depending on the volume of the fluid in beakers, she should be producing normal fluid output in the absence of diarrhoea or other illness. Slight yellowing may indicate some jaundice, and I think it would be good to check out her kidney function too.

Excess thirst with excess urine output can be related to the diabetes mellitus, or diabetes insipidus disorders but dry nappies is not so readily identifiable in the absence of other causes of dehydration.

So I am sorry that I cannot be more specific, however a clinical examination will be able to identify the visual symptoms such as yellowing of skin, or eyes.

Regards
