is there something wrong if my fecal matter contains blood?
Sent to Health Experts October 02 11:41 AM

My stomach started hurting this morning. It has been truly painful to use the bathroom, and my diarrhea contains blood. Is this something that I should be worried about?

Fresh red blood is usually a sign of haemorrhoids (piles). These can be painful and irritating but are not normally something to be concerned about.

If the blood is dark, or the stools are 'tarry' then this indicates bleeding from higher up the intestines or stomach and requires investigation. Also presence of mucus or pus on the stool may indicate an intestinal problem. If associated with diarrhoea then this could be an inflammatory intestinal problem or a bacterial infection.

Investigations such as barium meal or colonoscopy may be required and treatment will depend on findings. I think, in this case I would like you to see your doctor today to rule out a serious bacterial infection. You also need to drink plenty of water and avoid milk and dairy products until the diarrhea has stopped or at least 24 hours.
