Question

How can I boost my platelet count?

Sent to Health Experts October 05, 2006 2:37 p.m.

I am an alcoholic and have been sober for 4 days, completely. I had a small scab and it came off and wouldn't stop bleeding. I know my platelet count is low and it does affect clotting. My red cells are also enlarged. What can I do to help this?

The best thing you can do to help the low platelet count is what you have already done which is to stop drinking. Congratulations!

Your platelet counts should rise back to normal levels as your body recovers from the alcohol.

How low is low ? What was your platelet count? Monitor yourself for any other signs of bleeding such as bruising and black stools. If your numbers are severely low, you are risk for uncontrolled bleeding should you become injured.

Avoid taking aspirin also.

Find out what your platelt count was nad go back to your doctor in 4 weeks and make sure it is going up. There are other causes for low platele

t counts and you need to be sure that you do not have one of these condition.

Other conditions that can decrease platelet count include liver disease (hepatitis & cirrhosis), autoimmune disorders, and conditions that either slow down production or increase destruction of platelets such as diseases of the spleen. You need to make sure that your counts gradually increase back to normal levels. If not, you will need to puursue testing to find another cause for the low platelets.
